Paving inside the Beltway is tight work. Lots are small, driveways are short and often steep, the street is close, and the curb, gutter and sidewalk in front of most homes belong to someone else: the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, or VDOT. Clay like that softens when it stays wet and moves as it dries, and a driveway built on it without enough compacted stone will crack and settle. We dig and probe before we quote.
