Asphalt Paving in Belle Haven, VA

Asphalt paving in Belle Haven means working at the edge of the Potomac. The CDP sits at an elevation of about 15 feet, with the river on the east and tidal Hunting Creek on the north, across from Alexandria. The first house in today's community went up in 1928 after civil engineer David Howell bought the old West's Grove plantation land and laid out a golf club and subdivision; Belle Haven Country Club still operates. The 2020 census counted 6,851 residents and 3,263 housing units.

Flood history

New Alexandria and Belle View, both within the CDP, are among the lowest-lying residential areas in Fairfax County and were damaged by flooding during Hurricane Agnes in 1972 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Low ground means high water tables, slow drainage and pavement that sits on damp material much of the year. Driveways here need a well-compacted stone base, careful attention to where water goes and edges that will not wash out.

Older homes, mature trees

Many homes in Belle Haven date from the 1920s through the mid-century years, on lots shaded by large trees. Roots lift driveway edges and shade keeps surfaces damp. When we rebuild an older driveway here, we cut back root-damaged areas where safe for the tree, rebuild the base and set a slope that drains toward the street.

Belle View and the Parkway

The George Washington Memorial Parkway runs through Belle View, and Richmond Highway bounds the CDP on the west. The Belle View Shopping Center and the condo buildings along the river have parking lots that need phased repair, sealing and restriping.

Streets

Most public streets here are VDOT-maintained, and the Parkway belongs to the National Park Service. Entrance changes on public streets follow VDOT's private entrance rules.

Marina and riverside parking

Belle Haven Marina and Belle Haven Park sit along the river, and the condo buildings at River Towers have large parking areas near the water. Pavement close to tidal water gets wetter and stays wetter, so drainage to inlets and crack sealing are especially important. We avoid sealing when rain or a high tide is expected.

Country club area

Homes near Belle Haven Country Club often have long, curving driveways with turnarounds. Curves take extra wear at the outside edge, which we build up with extra base and support.
