Paving in the City of Fairfax

Asphalt paving in Fairfax, the independent city, covers about 6.2 square miles of neighborhoods around a historic core. The City of Fairfax was incorporated as a city by court order in 1961 and is separate from Fairfax County, even though it is the county seat. The 2020 census counted 24,146 residents and 9,330 housing units, and the 2025 estimate is close to 26,800. Most homes here were built in the postwar decades, and many driveways have been resurfaced at least once.

Old Town Fairfax

The City of Fairfax Historic District, listed in 1987, sits around the junction of VA 236 and VA 123, with the 1800 courthouse, the 1873 Fairfax Public School and the 1900 Old Town Hall. Homes and small businesses near the district have narrow drives and compact lots. Parking lots behind older buildings often mix concrete, asphalt and gravel, and we can bring those together into one well-drained surface.

Postwar neighborhoods

Outside the core, most streets are lined with split-levels, ramblers and colonials from the 1950s through the 1970s. Their driveways are at an age where a sound one needs crack sealing, edge repairs and an overlay, and a failed one needs to be rebuilt. We probe a few spots and show you what the base is doing.

City streets

Because Fairfax is an independent city, its residential streets are run by the city rather than VDOT's county system. Changes at the curb or apron go through the City of Fairfax. Just outside city limits, in Fairfax County, VDOT handles most roads. We confirm which side of the line you are on.

Busy corridors

US 50 and US 29 meet in the northeast corner of the city and run together as Fairfax Boulevard for about 2.8 miles. Business lots along that corridor and along Main Street (VA 236) and Chain Bridge Road (VA 123) see heavy turning traffic at the entrances. We repair those at full depth and phase work around business hours.

Near George Mason University

George Mason University sits just south of the city line, and rental homes near campus often have more cars than the driveway was built for. Widening or adding a side pad on a proper base keeps cars off the lawn and the edges intact.

Services in Fairfax

  • Driveway replacement and resurfacing
  • Widening and parking pads
  • Repair, crack sealing and sealcoating
  • Business lot patching, overlays and striping

Paving around George Mason's calendar

Neighborhoods just north of the university fill with student cars during the semester. If your street is crowded with parked cars, paving is easier to schedule in summer or during breaks, when the trucks have room to maneuver. For rental owners, we can also time work between leases.

Repeated overlays

In the postwar neighborhoods, it is common to find two or three old overlays stacked on a driveway. Each one raised the surface, and the cracks underneath kept coming back through. When that is the case, milling or removing the layers and building one good section is the better spend.
