Subdivisions Built in Two Decades
Asphalt paving in Burke mostly means maintaining and replacing driveways in subdivisions that went up in a rush. Kings Park, begun in 1960, was the first big subdivision in the area, and many more followed over the next two decades until Burke was densely suburban. The Burke CDP had 42,312 residents and 13,880 housing units in 2020, only 1.6 percent of them vacant, and 71.9 percent of households were married couples. People here tend to stay, and they tend to care what the driveway looks like.
The land that became Burke Lake
In 1951 the federal government proposed condemning 4,520 acres in Burke for a second Washington airport. In 1958 it chose Chantilly instead, and that site became Dulles. Much of the rejected land became Burke Lake Park, an 888-acre county park around a 218-acre lake, and Burke Centre. The neighborhoods that followed were built quickly, on cut-and-fill grading over the rolling ground of the Pohick Creek valley.
Driveways forty to sixty years old
In the oldest sections, driveways have been resurfaced once or twice and are reaching the point where another overlay will not hold. Signs include cracks that return in the same places after each overlay, edges that keep breaking off and a surface noticeably higher than the garage floor. In those cases we remove the old layers, rebuild the base and pave once. In newer sections, crack sealing and a sealcoat every few years usually keep driveways in good shape.
HOA common areas
Many Burke communities have HOA-maintained parking courts, private streets and pool lots. Fairfax County notes that private and HOA roads are maintained by their associations, not VDOT. We provide boards with a written scope by area, section maps for resident notices and a sealing schedule so the budget is predictable.
Slopes toward Pohick Creek
Pohick Creek runs through the valley below the historic Silas Burke House. On lots that slope toward the creek and its branches, driveways collect runoff from the street. A crown, a swale or a trench drain at the garage, built in during repaving, keeps that water off the surface and out of the garage.

Burke Centre and the VRE
Burke Centre, built on part of the land once set aside for the airport, has clusters of homes around shared parking areas and private streets, plus commuter parking near the Burke Centre VRE station. Commuter and cluster lots get heavy daily use on weekdays and lighter use on weekends, which makes weekend work easier to arrange.

Burke Questions
Our HOA maintains the parking courts. Can you give us a phased plan?
Yes. We map each area, price it separately and schedule work so residents can plan around it.
Is VDOT responsible for my street in Burke?
Public streets in Fairfax County are mostly VDOT-maintained, but private and HOA streets are maintained by the association.
How do I know if another overlay will work?
If cracks keep returning in the same places or the surface is above the garage floor, the base or the layer buildup is the problem, and replacement is usually better.
Can you pave on weekends?
Weekend work can be arranged for HOA and commuter lots where weekday access is critical.
